Description
The soldiers of Shivaji, the legendary Maratha warrior king, were known for their distinctive and practical attire. They typically wore turbans known as “phetas” or “pugris,” which provided protection from the sun and served as a symbol of their loyalty to the Maratha Empire. Their clothing included traditional “kurta or Angarkha”and “dhotis” (loincloths), often in earthy tones for camouflage in battle. Additionally, they carried a range of weapons, such as swords, shields, and “bichwa” (dagger), which were essential for their martial prowess. This attire not only reflected the practical needs of a warrior but also symbolized their commitment to the Maratha cause during the 17th-century Maratha Empire under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji.
